"In 1989, the House of Commons pledged to end child poverty in Canada by 2000.
But Statistics Canada figures for 2005, the most recent year available, show that the percentage of children living in poverty remains in the double digits - roughly the same level as when the House passed its all-party resolution.
Some progress has been made, though. The number of Canadians under the age of 18 living below the low-income cutoff has dropped substantially since 1996.
